On average, a person spends 80% to 90% of their time daily communicating with each other (Research Gate) - Source: Weshare.net
That's a lot of communicating going on. 🗣
This only speaks to how essential communication is to our lives. Our daily time is the sum of our life. With this understanding, the bulk of our life is spent communicating with others in one method or another. We know that not every relationship holds the same value- so we all put a different emphasis on communication-based on the relationship of the person we are communicating with.
Our marital relationship is at the top of the list of primary relationships we hold at a high value. How we communicate with our spouse matters more than in any other relationship.
According to a recent American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) study, communication problems were the number one reason for divorce in the United States. The study stated that about 67.5 percent of all marriages failed because of a breakdown of communication. The reasons for lack of communication include arguing, the inability to understand the other spouse or total lack of communication.
Healthy communication is the foundation for any married couple (and especially true when business is added to the mix).
Here are some practical ways health communication can be infused into the marriedpreneur journey:
- Be considerate: Don't jump to conclusions; let the other person get their thought out before responding.
- Understanding: Confirm you understand what was just said before responding.
- Triggers: Get clarity about what words or situations may trigger your spouse - walk carefully through these places.
- Needs: Know what your needs are (and communicate them) and likewise, get clear about your spouse's needs
- Don't assume: Even if you know your spouse well, give space to grow and change.
These practical and actionable steps can be added to any marriedpreneur journey that will always yield healthy results. We primarily keep this practice routine in our daily journey with legacy meetings. We mention them all the time because they have changed our lives.
