Authorities in Toms River are investigating a crash that left a senior woman dead in Toms River Saturday afternoon.
The incident happened at approximately 2:52 p.m. at the intersections of New Hampshire and North Maple avenues where emergency responders found the two vehicles severely damaged upon their arrival.
According to a preliminary investigation, police say the unidentified 82-year old woman was traveling northbound on New Hampshire Avenue when a Hyundai Santa Fe traveling in the southbound lanes attempted to make a left turn at the intersection resulting in the collision. Police would only say that the driver of the Santa Fe is a 33-year-old woman.
The elderly woman was extricated from the vehicle by firefighters and rescue crews then transported to Community Medical Center where she died a short time later police said.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Toms River Police.
