Newark police are working to determine whether a gunshot victim who arrived at a local hospital Wednesday afternoon was injured in a shooting reported in the city earlier that day.
According to authorities, a ShotSpotter device detected gunfire in the area of Webster and Crane Streets around 3:40 p.m., prompting officers to respond.
Upon arrival, police found evidence of a shooting, but no victims were located at the scene.
As detectives searched for evidence, police alerted area hospitals to be on the lookout for possible walk-in gunshot victims.
A short time later, University Hospital officials notified police that an unidentified individual had entered the emergency room suffering from a gunshot wound just before 4 p.m.
Investigators are now working to determine whether the hospital patient was injured in the Webster and Crane Streets shooting or if the incidents are unrelated.
The motive for the shooting remains under investigation, and no additional details were immediately available.
Authorities urge anyone with information to contact law enforcement.
