Residents on the 15th Avenue side of The New Community Housing complex dialed 911 after they heard multiple rounds of gunfire from what they believed was an automatic rifle in the Central Ward.
A ShotSpotter device was activated in the area of 55 Jones Street, detecting several gunshot sounds around 8:05 p.m.
Newark officers arrived and found shell casings, but no victims were located after cops canvassed the scene.
Residents on Hayes Street said they heard loud arguing just before gunfire rang out near the complex.
The suspect fled the scene and has not been captured by police.
