Gunfire Erupts in Newark Critically Injuring Man

A male victim reportedly shot multiple times on Clinton Ave. and Fabian Place in Newark's South Ward, collapsed a short distance away on South 17th Street. 

Multiple rounds of gunfire erupted in that area shortly before 11:30 p.m, striking the victim several times. 

The man (who was reported to be around 22-years-old) was rushed to University Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. 

Authortities setup crime scenes on Clinton Ave. and Fabian Place and the other on South 17th Street where they searched for evidence. 

Police followed a vehicle from the Clinton Ave. shooting scene where the suspects bailed from the vehicle and a foot chase occurred in the area of Frelinghuysen Ave. and East Peddie Street. One person was taken into custody a short distance away. It is not immediately clear if the suspect was involved in the shooting. 

The victim in an earlier shooting that took place on Lyons and Clinton Place died overnight. It is not clear if the shootings are connected. 

Police are investigating both shootings.
