Gun Found Inside Newark Charter School Prompts Lockdown

Police in Newark are investigating an incident where a student reportedly brought a weapon inside one of the city's charter schools on Wednesday.

According to officials at The Marion P. Thomas Charter School, police were called to the Sussex Avenue facility after they were informed that a student was in possession of a weapon inside their building.

School officials said, upon becoming aware of the incident, they immediately ordered the school on a lockdown status as they awaited the response from the Newark Police Department.

School officials said while all students and staff were secured, a thorough investigation was conducted by police where they discovered a BB gun inside the building school officials said.

Once law enforcement and school administrators deemed the area safe, the lockdown concluded according to school officials.

It was not clear if the student was arrested for bringing the gun into the building, but school officials did say that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken, including intervention from law enforcement.

"Bringing any instrument to school that resembles a firearm or weapon is a violation of school policy and the law," school officials said.

"We want to thank the staff and students who provided us with the information necessary to investigate and bring closure to this incident.

We also want to commend everyone on our campus for executing the lockdown in a manner that followed MPTCHS' protocol for such an incident, in addition to maintaining composure for the duration of the situation".
