Newark

A report of an armed robbery in progress call that came into Newark Police headquarters had authorities rushing to a South Ward gas station overnight.

Police were called to the Exxon 'On the Run' gas station located in the single digit block of Elizabeth Avenue at around 11:30 p.m. on reports of an armed robbery that potentially had the suspect still on the premises.

Several units arrived to the scene and immediately setup a perimeter as officers noticed some commotion inside the store.

Cops cautiously entered the store and found a male suspect laying on the floor in a large pool of blood with several people reportedly restraining him.

After gaining control of the scene, police (who patrol the area and have a rapport with store employees due to community policing) were approached by several attendants who told officers that at around 11:30 p.m, the male suspect rushed into the store with an object (weapon) in his hand and announced a robbery.

According to store employees, the suspect became violent after ordering cash from the register an other items.

Store employees said during the robbery, the suspect began to go on the attack, leading several other employees to assist and ultimately disarm the suspect.

The suspect began to struggle in an attempt to gain control of the weapon, when other employes began to restrain the suspect, eventually causing a struggle that had the suspect fall to the floor and cause injury to himself.

Several employees were able to hold down the injured suspect while police were called.
