Sadly, we must report the death of another member of the Cranford Police Department, retired Detective Lieutenant Milton T. Mason.
Milton T. Mason, 84, passed away March 12, 2016. Mr. Mason was a military veteran who saw service with the 82nd Airborne Division and was a 28 year veteran of the Cranford Police Department, retiring in 1997 as a detective lieutenant in the Juvenile Bureau.
He was the New Jersey Golden Gloves light heavyweight boxing champion in 1959, the Cranford Jaycees Outstanding Man of the Year in 1967, the Cranford Junior Achievement’s Outstanding Man of the Year in 1987, and in 1984 was presented the Martin Luther King Distinguished Service Award by the Cranford Clergy Council. In addition to these achievements, Lieutenant Mason received numerous department commendations, including a chief’s medal, life saving citations, a combat medal from the New Jersey State PBA and was a 200 Club of Union County Valor Award winner for his apprehension, under fire, of a bank robbery suspect.
Mr. Mason served on the Ad Hoc Smoking Committee, Union County Juvenile Officers Association (founding member), Governor Kean’s Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect, Project ACCESS, Cranford Juvenile Conference Committee, Cranford Clergy Council, and was an Associate Pastor of St. Marks AME Church in Cranford.
Friends are invited to visit 5-8 PM Wednesday and 9-10 AM Thursday at St. Mark’s AME Church, 34 High Street in Cranford. A Mass will be held 10 AM Thursday at St. Mark’s AME Church, Cranford.
