Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes officers from the Newark Police Department, is investigating the fatal shooting of a New Jersey Institute of Technology student.
Authorities said Joseph Micalizzi, 23, of Freehold was shot this morning in a fraternity house located in the 300 block of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Boulevard in Newark.
The shooting occurred at approximately 3:22 a.m. and Micalizzi was transported to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:02 a.m.
College officials Micalizzi, is a junior majoring in mechanical engineering. Micalizzi resided in the Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) house, 317 MLK Blvd officials said.
Joe, made the dean’s list in the fall, was in his second year at NJIT after transferring from Brookdale Community College.
Authorities said at this time, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified.
The investigation is active and ongoing authorities said.
NJIT is offering an award of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest in this case.

The latest shooting brings the total of homicides since Friday to four, with a total of six people shot around the city.
