Authorities in Atlantic County announced that on Thursday, December 12, Fred Gilbert, 38, of Egg Harbor City, was indicted by an Atlantic County grand jury.

According to Atlantic County officials, Gilbert was indicted for Official Misconduct and related offenses in 2023 for his involvement in an incident that occurred within the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

Gilbert, who was then employed as a Sergeant in the facility, was indicted on nine counts of second-degree Official Misconduct, third-degree Witness Tampering, fourth-degree Obstruction, two counts of fourth-degree False Reporting to Law Enforcement Authorities, and fourth-degree Tampering with Physical Evidence, County officials stated. AdAtlantic County authorities said that it is alleged that on June 12, 2023, Gilbert concealed or destroyed contraband after it was recovered from an inmate who was being held inside the facility.

Additionally, county officials say Gilbert instructed a junior officer to create a false report indicating the contraband was not recovered and then authored his own report indicating that no contraband had been recovered.
