Police in Elizabeth took a man into custody then charged him with carrying a gun on a street in the city on Tuesday night.
According to a statement released by Elizabeth city spokesperson Kelly Martin, the incident happened at approximately 9:35 p.m. where units on a routine patrol of the area observed a large group of males at the end of Clark Place.
Spokesperson Martin said officers approached the group who were actively engaged in a dice game when one person broke from the crowd and fled on foot.
Officers chased the unidentified male a short distance when they said the suspect threw a 9mm handgun city spokesperson Martin said.
Police officers reportedly recovered the gun and the suspect after a foot chase that resulted in a brief struggle.
City spokesperson Martin said a 24-year-old Elizabeth resident was charged with obstruction, resisting arrest, unlawful possession of a handgun, certain persons who should not possess a handgun and possession of hollow point bullets.
There were no injuries reported.
