Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald has reported a tragic incident involving a pedestrian being fatally struck by a motor vehicle, leading to the arrest of 33-year-old Mr. Andres Estaban Silva of Flemington. According to a statement released by the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, the collision occurred on Friday, April 26, at around 6:10 p.m. near the intersection of Somerset Street and Veterans Memorial Drive in Somerville.
The initial investigation indicated Silva was driving a 2019 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck northbound on Veterans Memorial Drive.
As he made a left turn onto Somerset Street, he struck Mr. Flor De Maria E. Huamani-Sanchez, a 72-year-old resident of Somerville.
Following the collision, Silva made a U-turn and fled the scene, only to return a short while later and park his vehicle in a nearby parking lot.
Huamani-Sanchez was quickly transported to a local hospital with severe head trauma and internal injuries.
Sadly, she passed away from her injuries later that evening.
Silva has been charged with second-degree Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving Death and was taken to Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing.
The Somerville Police Department, the Somerset County Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team (C.A.R.T.), and the Major Crimes Unit are continuing their investigation.
Prosecutor McDonald, along with Chief Roman of the Somerville Police and Chief Manning, have urged anyone with information about this incident to contact the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit at (908) 231-7100.
