Newark officials report that firefighters rescued two residents with one firefighter also suffering a sprained wrist at a fire at 258 South 11th Street on Thursday.
Just before 2:40 a.m., firefighters responded to the occupied three-story, wood-frame building and located heavy smoke emanating from the basement and third-floor windows.
Firefighters located two residents inside the building and removed them. Other residents self-evacuated and the injured firefighter was transported to University Hospital for treatment.
The fire was considered under control at 3:22 a.m. Some 14 residents were relocated as a result of this incident.
The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation by the Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit.
