A stubborn multi-alarm fire this evening has at least two firefighters injured at this time.
Crews responded to a 5-story brick apartment building on Gregory Avenue just before 9 p.m. for a report of heavy fire at that location.
The fire which started on the top floor quickly spread through the older building as firefighters rushed to evacuate residents.
The estimated 300-400 residents escaped the fire unharmed but were left homeless after the blaze left the uninhabitable, according to preliminary reports.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries - one suffered burns to his neck while the other was injured when a portion of a ceiling fell on him - and were transported to an area hospital for treatment.
Mutual aid from Passaic, Wallington, East Rutherford, Rutherford, Carlstadt, Bloomingdale, Pompton Lakes and Wanaque responded to the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
