Firefighters in Newark swiftly extinguished a fire that burned at a recycling center in Port Newark on Monday night.
The fast-moving fire broke out at the Eastern Metal Recycling center located at 206 Calcutta around 8:15 p.m.
Firefighters arrived and found heavy flames burning through scrap inside the yard.
Crews arrived and stretched several lines after finding fire extending through the yard, and smoke billowing in the air and observed several miles away.
Residents in Newark's Ironbound section, parts of Elizabeth, and Bayonne complained of a strong burning odor lingering in the air even after firefighters knocked down much of the fire.
Crews continued to douse several hot spots.
The cause of the blaze has not been determined.
