Newark firefighters battled a raging fire that tore through a large multi-family building in Newark's South Ward on Friday morning.
According to preliminary reports, fire broke out in a building located at South 18th Street and Avon Avenue 4:10a a.m. sending over a dozen officers to the scene where they found fire engulfing a portion of the structure.
Everyone was able to safely make it out of the building before firefighters began to extinguish heavy fire that entered the cockloft of the building then tore through the roof.
More than a dozen residents were displaced and assisted by The American Red Cross.
EMS transported one firefighter to an area hospital suffering non-life threatening injuries.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
