Firefighters battled a stubborn fire that ignited inside a basement of a home located in Newark's South Ward this morning.
Crews were called to 456 Leslie Street for a fire with possible trapped occupants shortly before 7:30 a.m. where they arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the basement of the home according to reports.
Fire extended into the cockloft, but crews were able to take control of the blaze in less than an hour.
One person was assisted from the basement then transported to University Hospital in an unknown condition.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
