Firefighters Battle Building Fire in East Orange

East Orange

East Orange fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire that ignited inside a mixed occupancy building overnight.

Heavy fire and thick smoke ripped through the roof of the multi-family building that's located at 234 North 18th Street at around 2:30 a.m.

Crews arrived at the scene and made entry into the building where they found fire visible inside a second-floor apartment that began to extend to the upper floors.

It took East Orange firefighters, with the help of mutual aid, about an hour to bring the blaze under control according to reports.

A search of the building had not trapped or injured occupants.

More than a half-dozen residents were displaced reports said.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
