Firefighter Injured in Newark West Ward Fire

Firefighters are on the scene of a two-alarm fire that ignited inside a building in Newark’s West Ward a short time ago.

Heavy fire tore through a wood framed two and a half story house located in the 200 block of West End Avenue at around 3:10 PM

Fire officials signaled a mayday after a firefighter reportedly fell through a floor once crews made entry into the structure.

EMS rushed the firefighter to the hospital suffering non-life-threatening injuries. There were no other injuries immediately reported.

The house is being reported as vacant at this time.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.’

NPD UPDATE 4:02PM Shortly after 3 p.m., members of the Newark Fire Division responded to 219 West End Avenue on reports of a residential fire.

While fighting the fire, the fire captain fell through the 1st floor stairs at the vacant home. He is being transported to University Hospital for treatment.

The fire captain’s injuries are not considered life threatening.

The fire was considered under control at 3:32 p.m. The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by the Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit.
