Firefighter Injured in Downtown Newark Crash

Police are investigating a crash that injured a firefighter in downtown Newark Sunday night.

The collision happened around 9 p.m. near the intersection of Mulberry Street and Lafayette Street in downtown Newark. 

 Emergency responders rushed to the scene to assist, and the Newark Emergency Services Unit was dispatched to aid in the operation that involved a fire truck and a car. 

Upon arrival, responders discovered the wreckage of a car in a severely damaged state, along with the overturned fire truck.

The injured firefighter was promptly transported to University Hospital for treatment and, fortunately, is expected to make a full recovery.

In addition, two other firefighters involved in the incident were evaluated by medical personnel, though the extent of their injuries did not appear serious. 

Authorities are working diligently to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. It is currently unknown if any arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

The driver and other occupants of the involved car reportedly fled the scene. At least one person was reportedly detained by police. 

UPDATE: Driver has been apprehended after showing up at an area hospital suffering injuries.
