Fire officials are investigating a large fire that broke out inside a junkyard in Newark's South Ward on Sunday evening.The blaze erupted shortly before 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of Meeker Street and Frelinghuysen Avenue.
When first responders arrived at the scene, they found heavy flames spreading across several vehicles within the junkyard.
Firefighters swiftly struck a second alarm to bring in additional manpower and provide coverage for nearby structures, including a gas station that was evacuated as a precaution.
Firefighters worked for over an hour, stretching multiple lines to control the flames.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. No injuries have been reported.
