Newark firefighters battled a blaze inside a local auto repair shop Monday morning, leaving one firefighter injured and prompting an investigation into what sparked the flames.

According to a statement released by Newark public safety officials, crews responded to a report of a vehicle fire inside a commercial garage located at 14 E. Runyon Street at approximately 9:22 a.m.
The incident drew a swift response from the Newark Fire Division, which worked to contain the flames and prevent further damage to the business and surrounding properties.
The fire was declared under control at 10:52 a.m., officials said.
One firefighter sustained a possible ankle injury during the response and was transported to University Hospital for medical evaluation.
The exact cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Newark Department of Public Safety’s Arson Unit.
Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda commended the firefighters for their quick action in preventing the fire from spreading beyond the shop.
