Fire Breaks Out Inside Large Multi-Family Building in Newark's South Ward; Injuries

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reported that Newark Firefighters extinguished a two-alarm fire at 400 Irvine Turner Boulevard with one child reported as injured today.

According to Director Ambrose, the fire started at 1:40 a.m. where firefighters responded to a fire at the 4-story occupied building.

Crews arrived and found fire in a first-floor apartment and had extended to the upper floor after starting from the trash chute on the lower level.

Official say a second alarm was called at 1:50 a.m., with some 70 firefighters responding.

Firefighters evacuated trapped tenants. One adult and three children were evaluated by EMS for smoke inhalation.

One child was transported to University Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. One firefighter was overcome by smoke but refused medical attention and remained on duty.

No further injuries were reported officials said.

The fire was considered under control at 2:24 a.m. A total of 19 people were relocated, representing 7 families.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by members of the Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit.
