Authorities in Newark are conducting an investigation following a violent shooting incident in the Vailsburg section of the West Ward, which occurred early Tuesday morning.The shots fired incident was initially detected by a ShotSpotter device, which activated after gunfire was heard near South Orange Avenue and Alexander Street shortly before 12:30 a.m.
Upon arrival, Newark police secured the area, discovering shell casings and two gunshot victims at the scene. A third individual was struck by a vehicle after attempting to flee the area amid ongoing gunfire.
Among the victims, a female was found unresponsive and quickly attended to by emergency services. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has confirmed that her injuries were fatal.
The other two injured were rushed to University Hospital for treatment.
The shooter fled the scene and remains at large, with law enforcement actively seeking leads. The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation, adding to the complexities of the case.
Although the Essex County Prosecutor's Office has been informed of the incident, they have not yet announced their involvement in the investigation.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
