An Essex County resident received a 10-year prison sentence today for illegally possessing ammunition as a convicted felon, according to U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.The sentencing of Lamar McCullough, 33, followed his conviction by a federal jury on June 7, 2024, for unlawful possession of ammunition.
U.S. District Judge Katherine Hayden presided over the trial and delivered the sentence in Newark federal court.
According to the U.S. Justice Department, the case stemmed from a March 5, 2021, incident when Newark Police responded to reports of a shooting victim at University Hospital.
Surveillance footage captured McCullough at 7:22 p.m., shooting a victim four times at close range on Isabella Avenue in Newark.
Authorities recovered four 9-millimeter shell casings from the scene where the shots were fired.
Alongside the 120-month prison sentence, Judge Hayden also imposed three years of supervised release for McCullough.
