An FBI operation to capture a man wanted for an armed robbery that occurred at a mall in Elizabeth ended in the arrest of the man in Newark last night.
Authorities released few details regarding the incident that had FBI agents and detectives from Elizabeth Police Department in a residential neighborhood in the 200 block of 2nd Avenue in the city's North Ward at around 7:30 p.m.
According to preliminary reports, authorities were attempting to take the suspect into custody during the operation when the man fled in a vehicle that crashed into a pole then a mailbox on 2nd Avenue a short time after the pursuit.
Residents heard what sounded like gunfire immediately after the crash, but there were no confirmed reports that police fired upon the suspect or if the suspect shot at police.
EMS transported the suspect to an area hospital for treatment for an unspecified injury.
Reports said the suspect was wanted for a past armed robbery that occurred at the Jersey Gardens Mall, but authorities would not immediately release when the incident took place.
A crime scene was established, and the investigation remains active.
