Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray has announced that authorities have identified the victims from yesterday's fatal shootings in Newark and Irvington.
According to authorities, the first incident occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Howard Street.
Irvington police officers responded to a shooting call at tthi s location and located a male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
The victim, who has been identified as Samad Hargrove, age 38 of Irvington, was transported to University Hospital in Newark where he was pronounced dead at 12:56 p.m.
The second incident occurred at approximately 10:30 am in the area of South Orange and Isabella Avenues in Newark.
Newark officers responded to this area on a report of a shooting. Arriving officers discovered a male lying on the sidewalk suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
This victim, who has been identified as Alkawi S. McCoy, age 18 of Newark, was transported to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:10 am.
Both incidents are being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark and Irvington police departments.
Both investigations are active and ongoing at this time, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit. At his point the incidents do not appear to be related, according to Fennelly.
