The man fatally shot by a Central Avenue store owner yesterday in Newark has been identified as Mustafa Sheffield, 28, of Newark according to Katherine Carter of The Essex County Prosecutors Office.
Yesterday afternoon Sheffield entered the store located in the 500 block of Central Avenue, armed with a loaded gun and a backpack.
Once inside, the suspect announced a robbery. Sheffield ordered the owner to fill the backpack with money and gold while the suspect threatened to shoot family members. During the robbery the owner pulled his own weapon and shot Sheffield. The suspect was taken to University Hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead just before 3:30 pm yesterday.
Sheffield was killed by a single gunshot wound. At this time no charges have been filed but the matter will likely be presented to an Essex County Grand Jury.
