The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into a pedestrian strike that left a person dead overnight in Newark.
Emergency responders rushed to the vicinity of South 18th Street and 16th Avenue shortly before 10 p.m. where they arrived to find the victim laying on the ground suffering severe injuries after a car struck them at that location.
EMS rushed the female to University Hospital where doctors pronounced her dead a short time later.
Police and detectives set up a crime scene in the area where they searched for evidence and the driver who fled the scene.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
