Authorities are investigating a deadly multi-vehicle crash that occurred on Route 17 in Hasbrouck Heights, leaving one driver dead and several others injured, according to a statement released by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.
The crash took place on Thursday, March 6, at approximately 6:20 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Route 17 near Franklin Avenue.
Hasbrouck Heights police, along with local firefighters and mutual aid responders, arrived at the scene to assist the victims.
One of the drivers, identified as 30-year-old Edwin B. Coreas of Bogota, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Several other individuals involved in the crash were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of varying injuries.
Investigators from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, the Fatal Accident Task Force, and the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department responded to the scene to examine the circumstances leading up to the crash.
The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office and the New Jersey Department of Transportation assisted in shutting down the southbound lanes and establishing detours while emergency crews worked.
Preliminary findings indicate that Coreas, who was driving an Isuzu box truck, initially collided with another vehicle, triggering a chain-reaction crash involving four vehicles.
At this time, criminal charges are not expected, but the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department, with assistance from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit, continues to investigate the incident.
