The Essex County Prosecutor's Office are investigating a fire that killed one person in Irvington overnight.
Heavy fire ripped through a large three story house located at 21 40th Street shortly before midnight sending firefighters to the scene where they found the upper portion of the house engulfed in flames upon their arrival.
Crews attempted to make entry into the house but were hampered by the massive blaze according to fire officials.
Firefighters were able to stop flames from extending to a next door home.
The fire was brought under control in about two hours where crews performed a search of the home and found one person dead on the third floor.
The identity of the victim has not been released at this time.
Several municipalities including Maplewood and Newark provided mutual assistance.
