The Essex County Prosecutor's Office was called to assist in the investigation of a car crash that left one person dead early Saturday morning in Newark's downtown.
The violent collision happened at approximately 2 a.m. in the vicinity of McCarter Highway at Lombardy Street where emergency responder were called to the scene according to preliminary reports.
Rescue crews arrived at the scene and found two cars crashed and occupants reportedly ejected from the vehicles.
One severely injured person was pronounced dead at the scene while EMS transported the second person to University Hospital for treatment according to reports.
Police closed off the area to traffic for the crash investigation.
The cause has not been released at this time.
