Fatal Injuries Reported after Gunfire Strikes Five in Newark's South Ward

A violent overnight in Newark’s South Ward has police investigating at least one confirmed homicide and four others that suffered injuries from gunfire according to authorities.

Reports of multiple rounds of gunfire rang out in the 20’s block of Willoughby Street shortly before midnight sending scores of police to the scene where they immediately requested additional assistance after locating two people suffering injuries from gunfire according to initial reports from the scene.

One of the victims was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene while EMS from University Hospital rushed the other victim (who is reported to be a woman in her late 20’s) to the hospital suffering life threatening injuries as of the last time we checked (3:37 a.m.)

There were no immediate reports of arrests made.

In another shooting that happened in the city’s South Ward, emergency responders raced to the 80’s block of Schuyler Avenue after receiving several calls of a shooting with one person down.

Arriving emergency responders located a male victim suffering injuries after being shot at that location.

The vicim was transported to University Hospital where his injuries were reported as life threatening as of 4:17 a.m.

Officials at Beth Israel Hospital contacted authorities at around the same time as the Schuler Avenue shooting reporting that a victim who was suffering gunshot injuries entered the emergency department according to reports.

The condition of this victim could not immediately be confirmed.

Newark’s emergency responder (who were already physically and mentally exhausted from prior shootings) answered a call at around 4:30 a.m. for a person suffering a gunshot injury in the 400 block of Clinton Avenue.

Arriving units located a male victim suffering serious injuries after being shot in the back reports said.

According to the victim, gunfire erupted in the area and struck him while he was driving. His accounts could not immediately be confirmed.

The victim was rushed to University Hospital where he was reported to be in serious condition.

The motive for all of the shootings are under investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and Newark Police.
