An elderly man died following a two-alarm fire that broke out in his Glen Rock home, according to information released by the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office. The fire, which occurred on Birchwood Road on the evening of January 5, prompted a swift response from the Glen Rock Police and Fire Departments, along with mutual aid from nearby agencies.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene at approximately 9:21 p.m., where they encountered heavy smoke and flames engulfing the single-family residence.
During their efforts to contain the fire, first responders discovered an unresponsive man on the first floor of the home.
The victim, later identified as 82-year-old Frederick Visser, was pulled from the building, and CPR was administered at the scene.
Visser was transported to Valley Hospital in critical condition but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, the Glen Rock Police Department requested assistance from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Squad, which began an investigation in collaboration with local authorities.
The investigation, conducted alongside the Glen Rock Fire Department and Fire Prevention Bureau, determined that the fire did not appear to be suspicious in nature.
Authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the blaze, but no foul play is suspected at this time.
