The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating a fire that killed a person inside a home in Carteret on Tuesday evening.
According to Carteret Mayor Daniel Reiman's preliminary information, firefighters responded to a residential house fire on Lowell Street at 4:48 p.m. on Tuesday.
Upon arrival, Mayor Reiman said firefighters discovered heavy fire and thick smoke protruding from the home.
Firefighters entered the burning home and removed an unconscious and unresponsive individual who was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition. The victim was pronounced dead a short time later.
The fire was brought under control and extinguished.
