The cause of a fire that resulted in the deaths of two people in Elizabeth Sunday evening is under investigation, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park announced Monday.
The victims of the fire have been identified as Cynthia Johnson, 65, and Russell Johnson, 85.
Elizabeth Fire Department units rushed to the 1100 block of Fairmount Avenue in Elizabeth Sunday evening to find the two victims unresponsive inside a burning home. They were transported to Trinitas Regional Medical Center, where both were pronounced dead.
At this time the fire appears to have been electrical in nature.
Autopsies performed Monday determined that the cause of death of the two victims was smoke inhalation, with the manner of death being accidental.
