The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has been notified and responded to a seal crash that occurred in a section of Newark during the overnight hours.
According to a preliminary investigation, the collision happened around midnight near the intersection of West Peddie and Irvine Turner Boulevard.
Police say the driver inside a private security vehicle somehow lost control and struck a pole causing the two occupants to become trapped inside the car.
Newark Emergency Responders rushed to the scene and extricated the victims but not before one was pronounced dead a short time later.
Police officials have confirmed that the vehicle was not a Newark Police squad car and neither of the victims were police officers.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
