Fast-Moving Fire Displaces Over a Dozen Residents in Newark's North Ward

A multi-alarm fire broke out early Sunday morning, March 2, 2025, affecting several residential buildings on Woodside Avenue, according to information released by Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda.  

Firefighters responded to the scene at approximately 1:14 a.m., with additional alarms called at 1:28 a.m. and 1:38 a.m. as the fire spread to multiple homes at 181-183, 185, 187, and 189 Woodside Avenue.  

Two firefighters sustained injuries while battling the blaze.

A Fire Captain was transported to University Hospital for treatment of a head injury, while another firefighter was evaluated for pain following a fall. No other injuries were reported.  

The fire displaced 13 families, totaling 44 people, who are now being relocated. Fire crews brought the fire under control by 6:10 a.m.  

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Newark Department of Public Safety’s Arson Unit.

 

UPDATE: - Two adult civilians who were transported to University Hospital for treatment have been released.

 

- Injured Fire Captain and injured Firefighter have each been released from University Hospital. 

 

- Total of 67 people (49 adults and 18 children) are being relocated. 

 
- Cause and origin of fire remains under investigation.
