Essex County authorities are looking into the circumstances behind a deadly encounter Tuesday night, claiming the life of a male victim in Newark's South Ward.The incident occurred around 9 p.m. in the vicinity of 911 South 16th Street, within the Upper Clinton Hill neighborhood.
Upon receiving reports of gunfire, police units arrived at the scene, finding the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
Immediate requests for EMS assistance were made, but despite swift action, the victim was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.
Homicide detectives taped off the area to commence their investigation. Eyewitness accounts pointed to a black male suspect, last seen fleeing the scene on foot.
He was described as wearing a light-colored shirt and blue jeans, details that have now become crucial leads in the ongoing probe.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office, with the support of Newark's Shooting Response Team, is spearheading the investigation into this senseless act of violence.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
