Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of Omar A. Firozvi, 21, Elmwood Park, on charges of Assault By Auto and Knowingly Leaving The Scene Of A Motor Vehicle Accident Resulting In Serious Bodily Injury.
The arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Elmwood Park Police Department.
According to officials, at approximately 2:10 a.m. on October 26, while assisting a disabled motorist on River Drive near Marginal Road, Elmwood Park Police Officers witnessed a black Ford Fusion strike a pedestrian who was standing next to the disabled vehicle.
Police said that the Ford then continued north on River Drive until it was stopped by one of the police officers who witnessed the collision. The driver, Firozvi, was uninjured and taken into custody.
Officials report that the victim, an 18-year-old male, was transported to Saint Joseph’s Regional Medical Center with serious injuries where he remains in critical condition. As a result of the investigation, Firozvi was charged with one count of Assault By Auto and one count of Leaving The Scene Of A Motor Vehicle Accident Resulting In Serious Bodily Injury.
In addition, Firozvi was charged with multiple motor vehicle violations including Driving While Intoxicated and Reckless Driving. He is scheduled for a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, on Friday, November 13.
Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
