Elizabeth Police officials are looking into an armed carjacking that resulted in a high-speed pursuit through several sections of Newark Friday evening.
In the second armed carjacking that occurred in Elizabeth on Friday, the incident unfolded when an armed suspect pointed a gun in the face of a driver in a section of the city then took their Range Rover just before 9:10 p.m
Officers on patrol came across the vehicle and began chasing the car after the driver ignored the police lights and sirens.
The suspect led officers on a ‘cat and mouse’ chase through sections of Newark's West, North, Central and South wards with speeds reaching about 70mph near Bergen Street and Avon Avenue.
According to reports, the pursuit lasted about 40 minutes in Newark before Elizabeth Police broke the chase off after losing the vehicle near Avon Avenue and South 11th Street.
An early armed carjacking in Elizabeth had police chasing a vehicle occupied by an armed carjacker who took the victim's grey BMW 3 series shortly before 4:45 p.m.
Police chased the vehicle up Route 1&9 into Newark, where officers lost the car near McCarter Highway and Murray Street.
There were no reports of physical injuries in either carjacking.
