A 28-year-old woman was accidentally shot early this morning, after she intervened in a man's attempt to possibly hurt himself, police said.
According to Lt. Daniel Geddes, shortly after 2 this morning, police responded to a 911 call reporting a suicide attempt on New York Avenue, where a woman was shot in the hand.
Upon arrival, officers found the Elizabeth woman with a gunshot wound to her hand. Geddes said.
The woman told police that as she intervened in the man's attempt to possibly harm himself with a handgun, she was shot.
The female victim was treated by Elizabeth Fire Dept. E.M.S. and Trinitas Hospital Paramedics, and transported to University Hospital trauma center in Newark where she was listed in stable condition, added the lieutenant.
The male was transported to Trinitas Hospital for observation.
The handgun was legally registered to the female victim. The incident remains under investigation.
