Elizabeth Man Arrested in Connection with Hit-and-Run Death of Linden Resident

After an extensive two month investigation, the Linden Police Department Accident Investigation Unit and Union County Homicide Task Force have arrested 37-year-old Alexis Ramos for the September 12th death of 18-year-old Linden resident Rajon Lasane.

Rajon Lasane left his job at the Linden Shoprite at 12 am on September 11th, but never made it home.

While walking North on US 1 & 9, Mr. Lasane was fatally struck by a 2002 Suzuki Hayabusa, allegedly being driven by Alexis Ramos of Elizabeth.

After the collision, Ramos fled the scene, leaving Mr. Lasane lifeless in the left lane of northbound US 1 & 9 near the intersection of Route 287.

Before emergency personnel could arrive on scene, Mr. Lasane’s body was struck by another vehicle.

Linden Police Department Traffic Investigators Peter Hammer and Mark Kahana responded to the scene to investigate the fatal collision.

During their investigation, Investigators Hammer and Kahana located several key vehicle parts across the crime scene, which led them to identify the suspect vehicle as a 2002 Suzuki Hayabusa. Investigator Hammer retrieved several videos from area.

The 2002 Suzuki Hayabusa was located on Grier Avenue in Linden by Officer Michael Richmond. The motorcycle was parked on a public street, concealed by a vehicle cover. The motorcycle was towed from the scene.

Investigator Hammer secured a search warrant for the motorcycle, where it was subsequently processed by the Union County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit. Evidence retrieved from the motorcycle led to Ramos. Investigator Hammer tracked Mr. Ramos to an address in Elizabeth, where he made contact with a friend of Ramos’.

On Tuesday, November 10th, 2015, Alexis Ramos responded to the Union County Prosecutor’s Office in Elizabeth to speak with Investigator Hammer and Union County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Rudy Correia. During the interview, Ramos confessed to striking Mr. Lasane on US 1&9 in Linden.

Alexis Ramos was charged with New Jersey State 2C:11-5.1, for knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death, a second degree crime.

Ramos is being held at the Union County Jail, with a $75,000.00 bail with no cash alternative. He was also arrested for several outstanding warrants.
