Two New Jersey men have been sentenced to prison for their involvement in a late-night robbery that resulted in the shooting of a taxi driver, as announced today by U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.Walter Williams-Lang, 22, hailing from Elizabeth, received his sentence of 87 months in prison today, while Naeem Jackson, 24, from East Orange was sentenced on November 29, 2023, to 103 months behind bars.
Both defendants had previously pleaded guilty to various charges, including attempted Hobbs Act robbery, conspiracy to use and possess a firearm during a crime of violence, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Jackson faced additional counts related to Hobbs Act robbery and carjacking.
The sentencing, handed down by U.S. District Judge Robert Kugler in Camden federal court, marked the culmination of a case that saw both defendants admit to their roles in a shocking crime spree.According to court documents and statements made in court:
On May 14, 2022, the defendants brazenly brandished a loaded firearm to demand a taxi driver's fares, ultimately shooting the driver.
Jackson further confessed to a separate incident on May 5, 2022, during which he brandished a loaded firearm, demanded a taxi driver's fares, cell phone, and wallet, and then stole the driver's vehicle.
In addition to the prison sentences, Judge Kugler imposed three months of supervised release for each of the defendants, ensuring that their legal consequences extend beyond incarceration.
The sentencing sends a clear message that violent crimes will not be tolerated in the community.
