A police officer and a civilian were transported to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries after a Hazmat incident inside a building in Elizabeth left them feeling ill.
According to preliminary reports, emergency responders were called to 135 Madison Avenue (YMCA) after receiving reports of some type of chemical leak at approximately 9:45 p.m.
Upon arrival, crews found that there was no chemical leak, but a person inside the building used a chemical to do a cleaning of some type according to reports.
The officer was exposed to the chemical while checking the building for victims.
Firefighters ventilated the building and found no other occupants injured according to reports. The incident remains under investigation.
