Authorities are investigating a armed robbery that turned into an assault of an elderly man in the city's South Ward Friday evening.
Police responded to reports of an armed robbery in progress that happened in the single block of Shanley Avenue at around 6:30 p.m. where arriving officers found the badly assaulted and bleeding elderly male victim at that location.
The victim (who is around 79-years-old) suffered multiple cuts and bruises was rushed to University Hospital where he was treated and observed overnight at the hospital.
Initial reports from the scene indicated that several black male suspects followed the man into a hallway on Shanley Avenue where they began to rob and beat him.
The victim's injuries were not reported to be life threatening.
There were no immediate reports of arrests made.
