A shots fired incident that occurred in East Orange this evening had police on a high speed pursuit that ended in arrests in Newark.
Gunfire rang out on South Harrison Street at approximately 8 p.m. sending police to the scene where officers arrived and were told that a silver Nissan truck that was occupied by several suspects fired shots at individuals in the area then sped away from the scene.
Police found the occupied vehicle then attempted to pull it over when the driver sped away.
The suspects entered I-280 east with officers followings according to police.
The incident came to an end when several suspects bailed from the vehicle at the intersection of James Street and University Avenue.
Multiple police agencies including the Essex County Sherriff’s Office, Newark Police, NJIT Police, NJ Transit, and Rutgers Police swarmed the area on foot and apprehended at least two of the suspects near Washington Park.
Officers checked a third potential suspect near the intersection of Bridge and McCarter Highway but it is not clear if the person was placed under arrest.
The incident remains under investigation.
There were no injuries reported.
