East Orange School Teacher Fatally Injured in Shooting

Newark --Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and East Orange Police Chief William C. Robinson announced today that the East Orange Police and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force are investigating the fatal shooting of a school teacher.

Authorities said, ​Latrena May, 27, of East Orange was fatally shot shortlyafter 10 pm yesterday.  Andre L. Higgs, 42, of Watchung has been charged with murder and weapons offenses. Higgs is the father of May's child authorities said.

The preliminary investigation indicates the two were arguing in front of the victim's home in the 100 block of Tremont. An officer patrolling the area was flagged down by the victim. When the officer approach the two Higgs shot the victim. The officer then shot Higgs.

May, who is a teacher at Pride Academy in East Orange, was pronounced dead at the scene. Higgs was transported to University hospital.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
