Police in East Orange are on the search for a suspect who is wanted for leading officers on a high-speed pursuit that came to a crashing halt on a street in Newark on Wednesday evening.
According to preliminary reports, East Orange officers attempted to pull over a vehicle in their city limits when the driver ignored officers' lights and sirens then sped away.
Police say, the driver sped toward I-280, where he barrelled his way onto the eastbound lanes with East Orange Police following.
The pursuit came to an end when the suspect lost control of the car and slammed into a traffic light and a parked car in the vicinity of Sussex Avenue and Norfolk Street.
Police say the suspect immediately bailed from the car prompting NJIT officers -who were patrolling the area- assisted East Orange in the foot pursuit.
Officers from Newark, NJIT, and East Orange searched the area for a black male suspect who was last seen wearing a long sleeve shirt, du-rag, and blue jeans.
After canvassing the neighborhood, police could not locate the suspect, but they have positively identified the assailant, according to police.
A pole was knocked to the ground during the incident, but there were no serious injuries reported.
