Bloomfield Police are continuing to investigate an incident involving an assault on a crossing guard that occurred on the morning of December 19.According to a statement released by the Bloomfield Police Department, officers responded around 8:30 a.m. to reports of an attack at the intersection of Glenwood and Llewellyn Avenues.
Witnesses at the scene reported that a man, later identified as Demitrius Childs, 32, of East Orange, assaulted a crossing guard while she was on duty.
According to police, Childs attempted to stab the guard with a pen. Several bystanders intervened, assisting the guard and preventing any injuries.
Following the assault, Childs fled on foot in the direction of Watsessing Park, heading toward East Orange.
Officers responding to the scene quickly located him along Glenwood
Avenue near the park. When approached by police, Childs resisted commands, engaged in a physical struggle with officers, and attempted to disarm one of them.
Childs was eventually subdued and taken into custody before being transported to police headquarters for processing.
He faces charges of aggravated assault and resisting arrest/eluding and has been transferred to Essex County Correctional Facility.
During the altercation, one officer sustained injuries and was taken to Mountainside Hospital for treatment.
